Virus infections in Australian prune orchards

Prune trees in the major production areas of Australia were surveyed for viruses during 1991-94. Of the trees, 18% were not infected and 82% were infected with 1 or more viruses when samples were indexed biologically and serologically. Viruses included prunus necrotic ringspot ilarvirus (PNRSV), prune dwarf ilarvirus (PDV) and apple chlorotic leaf spot trichovirus (CLSV). Plum line pattern was detected in 1 sample. No green ring mottle infection was detected. Rootstock/scion incompatibility was observed in 26% of trees and appeared to involve genetic and physiological factors, but could not be correlated with specific virus infections. The high incidence of virus infections in prune trees either <5 or >15 years old suggested that even though uninfected propagating material was available from the Australian Fruit Variety Foundation (FVF), growers and nurserymen continued to use infected material.
