Effects of water stress and temperature on Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, growth and yield were studied in a drought-sensitive King Fukuju (KF) and drought-tolerant TM 0126 (TM) cultivar of tomato in order to obtain fundamental information for breeding drought tolerant cultivars in Bangladesh. The reduction in dry matter production, fruit yield and yield related characteristics by water stress was less pronounced in TM than KF in both 30/25 deg C (HT) and 23/18 deg C (MT) regimes. Yield wassignigicantly higher at MT than HT in both cultivars. Temperature had no effect on dry matter production in TM, but in KF the reduction of dry matter by water srress was larger at HT than MT. Leaf water potential (#psi#) was reduced by water stress in both temperature regimes in both cultivars. #psi# was decreased more sharply in KF than TM and lower #psi# was observed at HT than MT. SOD activities were significantly increased by the water stress treatment in both cultivars, but the increase was more conspicuous in TM than KF in both temperature ragimes. SOD activities were higher at HT than MT in both cultivars. SOD activities are considered to be a useful criterion for drought tolerance in tomato.
