In 1984 the initial crosses resulting in the cultivars Apollo, Atlas and Grande were made with a view to improving yield, quality and horticultural characteristics of new asparagus cultivars. The female parents were selected from previously adaptedcultivars in California with high yields and superior spear quality. The common male parent of these cultivars was selected due to its genetic background (eastern USA) and its adaptability to the central California asparagus production area. Apollo, Atlas and Grande produced deep green spears with very tight heads and little anthocyanin pigmentation. In trials in California, these varieties showed a 25-50% yield increase over UC 157. Purple Passion was bred from 2 generations of single plant selectionsfrom Violet d'Albinga from Italy. This tetraploid cultivar produced large diameter, tight headed purple spears. Spear yields from Purple Passion were similar to UC 157 when planted at the same plant density.
