We humans need security,particularly when making decisions in an increasingly complex and technological world.In the absence of understanding or knowledge,we trust those who make us feel secure.The more confident or certain the advice,the more secure we feel.Unfortunately,confidence itself can sometimes be a trickster.This story starts with a board meeting of a lead-acid battery manufacturer,to discuss progress on the launch of a new product-a 6-volt leisure/golf cart battery.It was spring,and the product had to be on the stockists'shelves by early summer.Otherwise,the sales director could not guarantee that we would make any significant market impact.The request for this monobloc battery had come in January and it was now the end of February.New tooling had been made for the grids and the pasting machine shoes.Because it was not a design that could easily be accommodated in the existing automatic heat-sealing line,it was decided to go with the option of a glued lid.
