Interspecific hybridization effect on the content and the chemical composition of essential oils of eucalyptus grown in Morocco

In this work, the quality and quantity of the essential oils from the leaves of five Eucalyptus hybrids were determined. The crosses between E. camaldulensis and E. globulus subsp. maideni, E. globulus subsp. globulus, E. grandis, E. cladocalyx andE. diversificolor were studied. The average essential oil yield of parental samples varied according to species. It was 3.4% for E. globulus subsp. maideni, 2.5% for E. globulus subsp. globulus and 1.6% for E. diversicolor. E. camaldulensis, E. grandis and E. cladocalyx were characterized by an average yield less than 1%, i.e. 0.8, 0.4 and 0.3%, respectively. The average yields of the hybrids E. camaldulensis x E. globulus subsp. maideni and E. camaldulensis x E. diversicolor were 2.9 and 1.4% respectively. The combinations E. camaldulensis x E. globulus subsp. globulus, E. camaldulensis x E. cladocalyx and E. camaldulensis x E. grandis were characterized by the lowest yields, i.e. 1, 0.8 and 0.8% respectively. Chemical composition analysis showed thatthe hybrids E. camaldulensis x E. globulus subsp. maideni has > 70% 1,8-cineole, which is required by the users. Compared to E. camaldulensis, the essential oils of the other crosses reveal a slight decrease in percentage of this product. However, increases in the alpha-pinene and p-cymene contents were recorded. In general, the average percentages of all products detected in essential oils were intermediate between those of the parental species. Hybridization of eucalyptus can improve the quality andthe quantity of eucalyptus essential oils.
