Editorial: Nuclear image-guided personalized treatment and prevention of cancers

摘要

Among molecular imaging modalities, nuclear imaging agent is the most sensitive and could provide target specific information. Positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) nuclear molecular imaging agents generate information on target expression as well as function, pathway activity and cell migration in the intact organism. Molecular imaging agents by PET and SPECT are able to support proof-of-concept in translational drug discovery, development, delivery, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, pre-clinical validation and clinical staging, grading and differential diagnosis in cancers. Cellular imaging by PET and SPECT provides valuable information in monitoring and guiding clinical trial in the treatment of malignant and other diseases. PET and SPECT agents show high specific activities because they are made through a nuclear transformation and use carrier free forms of isotopes. On the other hand, CT, MRI, and ultrasonography are prognostic tools because they do not provide cellular target information, thus, assessment of the effectiveness of molecular targeted cancer therapy is not sufficient.
