This paper will discuss the ten best approaches to promote a collaborative environment on a complex project and the benefits of doing so. These approaches will be examined using "Lessons Learned" from both a project management and a claims perspective. The authors of this paper have more than 75 years of experience in the engineering and construction industries. They have seen the execution of many successful and many unsuccessful projects. This combined experience has shown both authors that the promotion of a collaborative environment or a "team" approach to managing a project can go a long way in the avoidance of letter writing wars, disputes and claims, and project losses. The ten best approaches will be discussed in ascending order of importance, but the authors believe that all ten approaches are very important to the successful performance of project execution.
