Zinc and incubation time effect on cadmium chemical fractions in two types of calcareous soil

This study was carried out to determine the impact of Zn on Cd fractions in two types of calcareous soil. Data indicate that, based on the soil texture, 64 to 70% of Cd was extracted in the water soluble and exchangeable (WsEx) and Fe-Mn oxide (Fe-MnOx) fractions. The proportion of Cd in WsEx and carbonate (Car) fractions in the sandy clay loam soil was higher than in the clay soil after 8 weeks. All the chemical fractions of Cd increased significantly with increasing Cd levels. As much as 50% of the added Cd was extracted in the WsEx fraction after 2 weeks. Adding Zn as Zn sulphate reduced the concentration of Cd in WsEx, Car and organic matter fractions, and increased the concentration of Cd in the Fe-MnOx and residual fractions. The presence of Zn reduced the concentration of Cd in those fractions that are easily released into the soil solution, from where they can be absorbed by plants.
