Hexagonal thin-film-like single crystals of LiCoO2 with a large surface area of approximately 100 x 100,mu m(2) and thickness of approximately 60-80 nm were grown in high-temperature molten chlorides at 1173 K. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) image and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns confirmed that the crystals have good single crystallinity and a trigonal LiCoO2 Structure. The color of the crystals gradually changed from brown to black from the outside upon the Li-ion deintercalation process along with an increase in the c-axis length from 14.054(3) to 14.298(1) angstrom.
