Formation of a decameric water ring in a cryptand-phthalic acid supramolecular adduct

A well-resolved decameric water ring was formed in the cryptand-phthalic acid supramolecular adduct of [H6L][(PA)(HPA)](2)center dot(H2O)(10), 1 center dot(H2O)(10), (PA(2-) = phthalate anion, L = N[(CH2)(2)NHCH2(C6H4-p)CH2NH(CH2)(2)](3)N). Formations of eight additional hydrogen bonds between the decameric water ring and the adjacent PA(2-) and HPA(-) anions make the water ring stable at room temperature. Structural refinement using low-temperature collected data gave an approximate composition of 1 center dot(H2O)(10.67), in which all extra tetrameric water ring was formed and the tetrameric water rings alternately connect the decameric water rings via sharing the apical O(12) atoms to,venerate a novel one-dimensional water chain.
