The self-assembly processes between binuclear [Zn_2] and [Cu _2] complex cations and exo-bidentate ligands [trans-4,4'-azo-pyridine (azpy), 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpeta), 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp)] generate two types of complexes: tetranuclear species with a rectangular topology and one-dimensional (1-D) coordination polymers: [{L~2(μ-OH)Cu_2}(μ-azpy)_2{Cu _2(μ-OH)L~2}][{L~2(μ-OH)Cu _2(H_2O)}(μ-azpy)_2{(H_2O)Cu _2(μ-OH)L~2}](ClO_4)_8 (1); [{L ~1Cu_2(H_2O)_2}(μ-azpy) _2{Cu_2L~1(H_2O)_2}](ClO _4)_4?(azpy)?2H_2O (2); _1~∞[{Cu_2(μ-OH)L~3}(μ-bpp)] (ClO_4)_2 (3); _1~∞[{L ~3Zn_2(μ-OH)}(μ-4,4'-bipy)](ClO_4) _2?2H_2O (4); _1~∞[{L ~3Zn_2(μ-OH)}(μ-bpeta)](ClO_4)_2 (5a); _1~∞[{L~3Zn_2(μ-OH)} (μ-bpeta)](ClO_4)_2??THF (5b); _1~∞[{L~2Zn_2(μ-OH)}(μ-4,4'- bipy)_2](ClO_4)_2?2H_2O (6) (H _2L~n are compartmental Schiff-base ligands resulting from condensation reactions between 2,6-diformyl-p-cresol with, respectively, 1,3-diamino-propane, 2-aminoethyl-pyridine, and N,N-dimethyl-ethylenediamine). The zinc complexes exhibit luminescence properties.
