Australia alumina prices have risen sharply to a four-month high as the market experiences tightness due to lower production at Alunorte refinery in Brazil. Alumina spot price stands at $452 per mton FOB Australia, up 26% m/m or $92 per mton since Hydro's Alunorte refinery in Brazil was ordered to cut production by 50% on March 1 by environmental authorities. We have learned that sellers in western Australia are quoting alumina on a formula basis of spot index plus a premium as high as $25 per mton.
