Alumina’s spot price decline continues and has even fallen below HARBOR’s short-term target of $450 per mton. As anticipated by HARBOR, Australian alumina spot prices have fallen to a seven-month low of $420 per mton, piercing our previously identified short-term target of $450 per mton. Spot alumina prices have fallen from $600 to $420 per mton in less than a month after Hydro announced that: a) its Brazilian Alunorte refinery, the world’s largest alumina refinery, will immediately restart 50% of its production capacity, and b) Alunorte's embargo to use a new bauxite residue deposit area has been lifted by federal environmental authorities. This implies it should not take too long before Alunorte can ramp-up to 100% of operating capacity. In China, domestic spot prices have increased slightly in the last week (up 5% to $383 per mton ex-works and excluding VAT), due to some alumina production curtailments.
