Scientists from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Jet Propulsion Laboratory have investigated the use of nanophase nickel-zirconium alloys for electrically conductive coatings and catalyst supports in fuel cells. Conventionally, noble metals have been used in these applications, because they resist corrosion in the harsh, acidic interior environments found in fuel cells. However, these metals are expensive, prompting the search for cheaper substitutes.
