A process that will allow carbon brake discs to be made from composite manufacturing scrap is being developed by a consortium of companies from the UK. Called ReBrake, the aim of the project is to find a cheaper, more environmentally friendly method to manufacture high-performance brakes. Carbon composite brake discs provide substantial improvements in both performance and weight compared with traditional iron discs, but the cost of such systems has so far made them largely unaffordable in the majority of applications, where their performance characteristics could bring substantial benefits.
