A research project that aims to provide a systematic understanding of the fundamental properties of all transition metal nitrides, based on their electronic structures, has been awarded $ 150 000 by the US National Science Foundation (NSF). The project, to be carried out by researchers at the University of Toledo in Ohio, USA, could accelerate the discovery of hard wear- and corrosion-resistant coatings. The specific aim of the project is to "transform the evolutionary trial-and-error development of protective coatings into a coatings-by-design approach", according to NSF.
