摘要

A team of engineers at Ohio State University is testing a new formulation of zirconia as a coating to protect jet turbines from extreme heat, so allowing the engines to run hotter and cleaner. For many years, highly insulating zirconia has been used to make ceramic coatings for turbines. Its use allows jet engines to run at higher temperatures - thousands of degrees. At these higher temperatures, however, sand and other particles drawn into the turbines stick to the ceramic, turn to molten calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) glass, and erode the protective coating, which is only about 250 μm in thickness, report the researchers, who were led by Nitin Padture, a professor of materials science and engineering at The Ohio State University.
