Environmental campaigners are pushing for an end to renewable subsidies for biomass, and for the removal of its carbon-neutral status under EU legislation, as revisions to the EU’s 2018 renewables directive (REDII) — expected by June 2021 — put pressure on the industry. Industry associations and frms have urged the European Commission against making amendments to the current sustainability criteria for biomass.
