US railcar manufacturer Trinity Industries trimmed its third quarter production schedule and shifted some deliveries to 2020 as it adjusts to softening railcar demand. The car maker’s changes come after a third quarter in which profits jumped by 77pc to $49mn compared with $27.7mn a year earlier because of higher revenue related to in- creased railcar deliveries and the expansion of its lease fleet. But new car “demand continued at lower levels during the third quarter due to economic uncertainty associated with industrial production and global trade,” chief executive Timo- thy Wallace said on 24 October. Those trends, combined with downward pressure on rail volume, have affected car lease rates and utilization as well as orders for new railcars.
