In a former life, Jim was a Chief Research Scientist in CSIRO. He is now an Adjunct Professor at UWA and at 85 still publishing research papers on soil chemistry and plant nutrition — and writing articles for Australian Plants.Botanists do not always choose an appropriate name for plants. For example, an upright growing Hakea is called Hakea prostrata. (It was first collected from an exposed ocean-side location.) But they sometimes get it spectacularly right: as in Verticordia. The name comes from the Latin "vertere" to turn and "cordia" hearts. So the name means the turner of hearts — which was one of the appellations of the goddess Venus. She was the goddess of beauty and the plant was so named because of the great beautyof flowers. (By the way, she was also the goddess of love, desire, sex, fertility, prosperity and victory. Make of that what you will.)
