The period in which the voyage of the Endeavour took place is often known as the "Age of Enlightenment" because of the resurgence of interest in learning, literature and scientific discovery.A major influence in scientific pursuits within Britain was the Royal Society. This organisation was founded as a 'learned society' on 28 November 1660 and from 1663 was known as 'The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge'. One had to be nominated in order to be a Fellow of the Royal Society based on the merits of your scientific work. This tradition continues to the present.
