摘要

The name comes from the Greek, hypo, meaning under, and kalymma, meaning a veil, an allusion to the calyx falling off like a veil or a cape. It was recognised early by Endlicher first as a section of Leptosperma in 1837, and then as a genus in 1840. He described two species: H. angustifolium and H. robustum. Since both were published at the same time, it wasn't clear which was to be considered is the type species; H. robustum was subsequently chosen because it was closer to the specification of the genus.
