IT'S EARLY MORNING on a midsummer's day in the Simpson Desert, just east of the Queensland-Northern Territory border, and the air temperature is already climbing above 40°C. With the jerky movements of a mechanical toy, a thorny devil emerges from the spinifex on a cautious mission to rehydrate. It stands totally still and - adorned in splotches of yellow-orange to tan-brown — all but disappears against a background of red sand and desiccated plant debris. A brown falcon, one of its major predators, circles overhead but moves on, suggesting the camouflage is highly effective. There's no obvious water about, but the spiky little lizard pauses at the edge of a claypan and extracts a drink. An uninformed observer would be none the wiser, but the liquid is travelling via capillary action — as if sucked through tiny drinking straws — upwards and invisibly between rows of scales running along the devil's legs and body to its mouth.
