摘要

Three new species of Salvelinus are described from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. The light spots on a dark background clearly place all three species in the genus Salvelinus. All three species are in subgenus Baione, which to date contains only one extant species, Salvelinus fontinalis. Synapomorphies of Baione include mottled vermiculated markings on the dorsal portion of the body, on caudal and dorsal fins; the black edge and white border of the pelvic and anal fins; and the lack of teeth on the basibranchials. The three new species all possess these synapomorphies of Baione. The higher number of vertebrae and retrognathous jaws, which form a slightly inferior mouth distinguish all three species from Salvelinus fontinalis. Salvelinus kingi, new species, is distinguished from Salvelinus multidentatus, new species, by the fewer number of teeth on the basihyal (5-7 vs. 8-9) and from Salvelinus angustus, new species, by fewer lateral-line scales (109-115 vs. 118-130). The numberof lateral-line scales of S. angustus (118-130) differentiates it from S. multidentatus (88-111).
