摘要

Kamataka accounts for 85 per cent of the coffee crop in India with the remainder coming from Kerala and Tamilnadu. Kodagu, Hassan and Chikkamagalur are the major coffee growing districts of Karnataka. Kodagu district is known for its vast areas of coffee grown in an eco-friendly way since decades. The coffee plant is shade loving which thrives in its natural habitat subjected to two months of drought after which sufficient rain triggers its annual flowering. Thereafter, adequate moisture is needed tosustain this, which determines the crop for the following year. Coffee ideally requires around 70 inches of rain through the year with clear periods of dry weather to enable its ripening. The Kodagu coffee plantation have predominantly prospered under natural shade which support the environment. So it is one the most eco-friendly way of cultivation of coffee, which anyone can see among the coffee growing areas worldwide. Along with coffee, black pepper is grown on the silver oak and Erythrina support,which adds to the income of framers. There are many other useful trees like Avocado, Coorg Mandarin, which is interspaced within this unique growing system and the practice has been perfected over the years, blending nature with agricultural production.
