Angustifolia is a recessive mutation reported in coffee wherein the mutant plants normally exhibit stunted growth with weak branches, narrow leaves, close internodes and low bearing habit (Fig.l). With an objective of developing a compact robusta typewith stable bush stature, the Central Coffee Research Institute (CCRI) has been trying to exploit an 'Angustifolia' type variant identified in sib mated C x R robusta progeny in Wayanad region. The breeding populations advanced from this mutant were planted at CCRI; RCRS, Chundale and CRSS, Chettalli for evaluation. Derivatives from selected plants from among these populations were planted in a couple of holdings near Sunticoppa in Coorg and being popularized as 'Aaradi Robusta' or 'Dwarf Robusta' in Coorg and its adjoining coffee growing areas. For the last couple of years, there has been a lot of inquisitive enquiries from coffee growers about the prospects of the 'Dwarf robusta'. Impressed by the early bearing nature and compactness of the bushes,several growers are procuring fruits/seeds from these holdings for raising seedlings and field planting. CCRI has been monitoring these plots and evaluated thefield performance. In order to clear the ambiguity among the planters, the antecedents of the plant material, yield performance and its prospects, longevity of production vis a vis normal CxR variety, is highlighted in this write up.
