A Study on the Application of Reinforced Waffle Soil to Improve Pavement Structures

摘要

One common cause of pavement damage is the insufficient load capacity of the soil base. This is frequently the case for roads on Taiwan Island, especially in the northern regions where rain is often abundant. To improve the load capacity of the base soil, most studies have proposed compaction during construction, in which the lateral displacement of the soil layers is restrained by the soil's internal friction. But in regions with abundant rain, as the water content increases, wetting-induced settlement is to be expected. This study proposes to use reinforced waffle soil so that the waffle structure provides restriction against lateral displacement of soil, and to use composite materials with reinforced concrete to improve the capacity against flexural stress. The analysis shows that this is a successful solution with favorable outcomes.
