Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been used in many wireless communication system applications and adopted by various standards. In particular, M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and phase shift keying (PSK) modulation schemes are commonly employed with OFDM systems. However, M-ary amplitude shift keying OFDM (ASK-OFDM) achieves comparable power and bandwidth efficiencies to M-ary QAM-OFDM and M-ary PSK-OFDM with less system complexity. Nevertheless, it has a higher peakaverage-power-ratio (PAPR) as compared to same schemes. In this paper, we investigate the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of un-coded and coded M-ary ASK-OFDM system in Rayleigh fading channel. Also, we study the effect of carrier frequency offset (CFO) on the BER performance of the system under investigation. Moreover, we study the BER performance of coded ASK-OFDM using convolution coding in order to reduce the effect of high PAPR associated with M-ary ASK-OFDM systems.
