Friction and Wear Properties of Si_3N_4 and SiC Used for Water-Lubricated Sliding Bearings

摘要

Water-lubricated ceramic bearings are attractive as the bearings of spindle system because of their superior thermal stability, stiffness and carrying capacity of rotor. In this paper, friction and wear properties of SiC and Si_3N_4 bearings under water-lubricated conditions were evaluated for proper application of ceramic materials as journal bearings in the high-speed high-precision spindle system. The results demonstrate that in comparison with Si_3N_4, SiC showed lower friction coefficient in short running-in time, and higher carrying capacity and smoother surface. In addition, the wear rate of SiC was lower than that of Si_3N_4 due to the occurrence of SiO_2 layer. Overall, under the current experimental conditions, SiC ceramic was more feasible for water-lubricated bearings to keep the high performance of spindle system.
