Communication between the dairy producer, forage grower, and custom harvester is essential for a successful silage program. Applying a homolactic bacterial inoculant to every load of forage ensiled consistently reduces the cost of producing and feeding a ton of silage.Achieving a higher density can reduce storage losses in bunker, trench, and drive-over pile silos by 50% or more. The time, effort, and money spent sealing bunker, trench, and drive-over pile silos can save dairy producers thousands of dollars worth of silage annually. Managing the silage "face" is essential for high feed intakes and low refusals. The points of the silage triangle are represented by persons responsible for (1) the dairy cattle, (2) the forage, and (3) the harvesting process. In some dairy operations, one person is responsible for all three points. But in many instances, both growing the silage crop and harvesting and ensiling the crop are done completely on a contract basis, creating a situation where a different person is at each point of the triangle. When communication between the points of the triangle is ineffective, inefficiencies can result that directly affect the bottom line.
