The Russian playwright and short story writer, Anton Chekhov, was born in Taganrog, a port on the Sea of Azov in southern Russia in 1860 and died in Germany in 1904 while visiting a Black Forest spa seeking relief from tuberculosis. Despite his short life, Chekhov is regarded one of the greatest writers of short fiction in history. His career as a playwright produced four classics and his best short stories are now held in the highest esteem by writers and critics alike. Interestingly, Chekhov practiced as a medical doctor for most of his literaty career: "Medicine is my lawful wife", he once said, "and literature is my mistress, when I get tired of one, I spend the night with the other".
