Annual herd turnover rates and reported reasons for culling are often misleading, and the timing of culling during the lactation may be a more useful indicator of potential management problems on a given farm. Conformation traits are often used to select for improved cow longevity, but these traits account for only a modest proportion of differences in cow survival. Substantial genetic variation exists between sires in the length of productive life of their daughters, as well as susceptibility to specific health disorders. Genetic improvement of cow survival should focus on direct measures of longevity, fertility, and health if possible.
