Epigenetic mechanisms interact in complex ways and at several hierarchical levels to secure the gene expression pattern of a given cell type. These mechanisms include DNA methylation (Fuks, 2005), histone modifications, in particular methylation and acetylation of lysines at N-termini of histones H3 and H4 (Martin and Zhang, 2005), chromatin remodeling events (Mellor, 2005; Varga-Weisz, 2005), as well as higher order chromatin arrangements and nuclear architecture at large (for reviews see Cremer and Cremer, 2001a; Kosak and Groudine, 2004; Foster and Bridger, 2005; Cremer et al., 2006a).
