On April 17, 2019, Peruvian citizens were shocked by a disturbing piece of news as they were having breakfast or heading to work. Former president Alan Garcia, who ran the country during two mandates (1985-1990 and 2006-2010), had shot himself as agents arrived at his home to put him in preliminary detention, in the context of a corruption investigation linking Garcia with Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht. Garcia was rushed to the hospital, but his death was confirmed later that morning.
