Trade in fresh fruit and vegetables between the various countries of southern and central Africa has the potential to increase dramatically during the next few years. Countries in southern and central Africa have shown a noticeable increase in the volume of fresh produce they trade during recent years, with consumer markets becoming more developed and a number of new export opportunities seen throughout the sub-Saharan continent.Particularly when it comes to fruit, the region is still dominated by South Africa, the fresh produce powerhouse at the tip of the continent. Not only is the country a fast-growing exporter with an increasingly attractive product range, but it also has arapidly emerging consumer market that is increasingly targeted by international and African suppliers alike. Driven by the arrival of true democracy in South Africa, southern African countries have found a new gateway to the world's markets, while their own borders, previously closed by apartheid, were opened up to bring a vast array of products from South Africa to their consumers.
