摘要

Around 20 years ago, GlobalGAP (previously EUREPGAP) certification established itself as the minimum requirement to sell fresh produce to major retailers in Europe. By the end of the 2000s, many European retailers started requesting multiple additional certifications with supplementary demands, especially in the area of worker welfare. This has been a very positive development towards making production more sustainable, despite the fact that one of the objectives of GlobalGAP - to save costs by eliminating the need multiple audits - was lost along the way.Consumer concerns with sustainability also led to increasing pressure on shipping companies to reduce their environmental impact. This resulted in the International Maritime Organisation setting itself the ambitious target of reducing C02 emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2030, moving towards a 70 per cent reduction by 2050 (compared to 2008 levels).
