In the April, 2016 issue of Compoundings, we continued our review of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015), Health Canada's implementation of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), which consisted of amendments to the Hazardous Products Act (HPA) and the Hazardous Materials Information Review Act (HMIRA). As we now know, when the then new finalized regulations were published February 11, 2015 in the Canada Gazette Part II, Phase 1 of the new regulations came into force. Through June 1, 2017, manufacturers, importers and employers may use either WHMIS 2015 or "WHMIS 1988," which is how Health Canada now refers to the old system, still in effect under their transition plan. But, after June 1, 2017, both manufacturers and importers must use WHMIS 2015. That is a little less than eight months away!
