Increases in Variations in Animal Behavior Induced by Autocorrelations

Switching between alternative actions, as well as variations in the intensity and duration of successive actions, represent the simplest and most abundant types of variation in animal instinctive behavior. This variation can be spontaneous in the sense that it is induced by the animal nervous system and is observed even in the absence of any ambient stimuli. On the other hand, this variation is not completely random. This review shows that the behavior of many animals displays autocorrelations, thatis, the dependence between quantitative characteristics of their successive actions. The interaction of autocorrelations with random impacts leads to an increase in the range of spontaneous variation, that is, uncaused variations in behavior unrelated tothe needs of the organism or external stimuli. This interaction and, correspondingly, increased variations are properties of the mechanism that controls instinctive behavior. This demonstrates that the widely accepted interpretation of instinctive behavior as a preprogrammed pattern reflects only one side of the coin. It is similarly true that instinct is a mechanism that generates behavioral variations that are not preprogrammed.
