In 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Spritam by Aprecia Pharmaceuticals, the first drug manufactured using 3D printing technology (3DP). While many have heralded this as a revolutionary way of manufacturing drug products, 3DP is not new but, in fact, a suite of well-established technologies originally developed to produce engineering prototypes. Thus, a thorough evaluation of the potential for pharmaceutical applications needs to take into account their key technology attributes, as well as their development histories and associated IP landscapes.
