This is one of the oldest types of domestic ducks as several 17th century paintings by different artists depict them in various colours. They were probably popular then due to their extraordinary headgear, although wild waterfowl may occasionally produce the odd crested individual· After some popularity in Victorian times, the Crested was almost lost until the 1950s when John Hall found one source and bred up from them, making them a good bird for exhibiting. Earlier reports stressed their utility aspects both with eggs and meat. The Bali is the only other Standardised crested breed.
