Engineers are constantly striving to improve the performance of man-made structures and systems. The challenge of achieving performance gains with both economy of natural resources usage and financial viability drives an incessant search for improved design, manufacturing and materials options. Advanced fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) have emerged as an increasingly attractive substitute for more traditional materials in applications ranging from high performance aircraft, through ground transport vehicles, to civil infrastructure. Since they achieved prominence in the 1970's with the adoption of carbon fibre for space launch vehicles and military aircraft, where high strength to weight ratios justified significant cost premiums, they have been hailed as the next generation of engineering materials. But progress in theirwider adoption has been less than the earlier commentators predicted. Today, advances in materials research and performance are pushing the capabilities boundaries outwards towards realisation of their potential.
