Farm tourism in Poland has until recently mainly provided additional accommodation for holiday-makers in the more scenically attractive regions. However, because of such changes as State farm privatization and economic problems such as rural unemployment, it is seen as having considerable potential for revitalizing local economies. The Olsztyn province, in the northeast, is an important recreational zone with a large proportion of forests and lakes. Farm tourism is being actively encouraged by local authorities. A study showed a rapid increase in the number of farms providing tourist services during 1992-93 and a general rise in incomes on those farms. Lack of finance for initial development remains a problem. However, support in the form of training programmes has been provided by the agricultural advisory service, and an agrotourism providers' association has been formed. Most farms offering tourist facilities are small or medium-sized. Tourism represents not only additional income, part of which can be invested in farm development, but also extra employment for family members. Additionally, there are beneficial effects on local infrastructure and trade.
