Naval service presents special requirements for castings in regard to strength, toughness, weldability, and marine corrosion resistance. Ferrous and nonferrous alloy castings are extensively used in the construction of naval ship and submarine hull structure and machinery components. High-strength steel castings, especially HY-80 and HY-100 steel, serve in surface combatants and submarines for hull inserts, rudders, shaft barrel and strut, stern tube, equipment foundations, valve bodies, etc.
