A dense, homogeneous coating with porosity less than 5 percent has reportedly been deposited by hypersonic flamespray onto cylinder liners in light metal engines by the German Institute for Manufacturing Technologies of Ceramic Components and Composites. The results were discussed in a paper presented at the 2003 SAE World Congress, titled "Advanced Hypersonic Flamespray Coatings for Cylinder Liners in Light Metal Engines" (SAE paper 2003-01-1099), by M. Buchmann, R. Gadow, and D. Lopez. In the hypersonic flame spraying (HVOF) technology discussed in the paper, the coating is deposited by an elliptically moving HVOF gun while the cylinder liner is rotating. The poor tribological behavior of light metal surfaces can be improved by this protective coating system.
