摘要

A microwave drill that melts holes in concrete has reportedly been developed at Tel Aviv University, Israel. The microwave drill can make a hole 2 cm deep and 2 mm diameter in about a minute. The drill works on materials such as ceramics, concrete, and glass, which absorb microwaves, but not on conductors such as metals, which reflect microwaves. In operation, the drill bit serves as an antenna that focuses microwave energy on a small area under the surface of the material, and the intense microwave energy rapidly melts the material in that spot. The temperature within that volume is said to be over 1500 deg C (2730 deg F). The area is rapidly heated because of the "thermal run-away effect."
