NEBRASKA is one of those regions that epitomises the 'smalltown America' we think we know from the movies. Even for Americans, the name conjures images of farmland, and 'the way things used to he'. Nevertheless there's a lot of modern manufacturing in Nebraska, and just outside Hebron - essentially a farming community of 1500 people - is Metal Quest Unlimited, a 40-person shop that serves the petroleum, energy distribution, hydraulics, agriculture, electronics, and automotive parts sectors. When Metal Quest needed help with automating inventory control practices, it turned to Kennametal, a small-town company when it started, but now a worldwide leader in tooling solutions. As a consequence it now uses Kennametal's ToolBoss, an e-storage tool inventory control system with embedded tool management software that can store a multitude of tools. 'We wanted a, better way of gathering tool use information at point-of-use to better understand the consumption rate of metalcutting tools used for particular jobs,' explains Scott Harms, MetalQuest president and founder. 'With ToolBoss, we have automated our inventory tracking system and improved our cash flow by reducing tooling inventory levels.'
