John Barrasso is a Republican senator from Wyoming. He is also chairman of the Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee. And he had some thoughts on how to reduce carbon dioxide emissions globally through innovation and technology and not carbon taxes. In a guest column in the New York Times in December, Barrasso commented on the meeting that took place in Katowice, Poland in December that involved nearly 200 countries. They were there to agree on rules to carry out the Paris climate accord. He said the delegates that attended the convention need to recognize three truths in order to make actual progress in lowering carbon dioxide emissions. "The first is, the climate is changing and we, collectively, have a responsibility to do something about it," Barrasso said. "Second, the United States and the world will continue to rely on affordable and abundant fossil fuels, including coal, to power our economies for decades to come. And third, innovation, not new taxes or punishing global agreements, is the ultimate solution."
