WAAIME will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2017. Originally made up of the wives of the members of AIME, WAAIME (formerly known as the Woman's Auxiliary to AIME) became a division of SME in 2008. During the past 100 years, the WAAIMEs have provided a significant amount of scholarship money to students in the mining, metallurgy, petroleum and geology fields at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate level. However, while doing research for the 100th celebration we have unearthed the stories of some other fascinating WAAIME projects in the past. Did you know that the WAAIMEs collected nylons during World War II to support the war effort? Or that in the late 1950s, the WAAIME organization was tasked by AIME to help raise funds for the Engineering Center building in New York City to house 15 professional engineering societies? It's amazing who these women knew or had connections to when it came to doing philanthropic work around the world.
