Beginning in 2003, SME and the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) worked with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to develop the Mining in Society merit badge (MiSmb), including the requirements, pamphlet, badge design and other materials. In 2017, MiSmb was one of only 39 badges that saw a year-over-year increase in number of badges awarded and was in the top 14 that saw at least a 10 percent increase. With a boost from the successful booth at the 2017 National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, as well as ongoing local SME Section efforts to support the badge, 4,673 badges were earned in 2017.
