AS THE CORONAVIRUS crisis has spread around the world, the impact has been felt in every sector, including mining. At the time of this reporting, a number of mines around the world, including Newmont Corp.'s Yanachocha gold mine, Vale's Voisey Bay Mine and Freeport-McMoRan's Cerro Verde copper mine, had drastically cut production in efforts to halt the spread of the virus. Copper was hit especially hard as countries throughout South America, including Argentina, Peru and Chile, closed borders or imposed restrictions. The result was copper mining stocks declining sharply.
